Amazon.ca prices seem to have gone up on Taiwan products even when Canada has no tariffs on them. Coffee too.
Whether Apple is making phones for US customers in India, China, or Taiwan, tariffs are applied to them for US customers. Tim Cook said US prices are not affected by tariffs. That means our prices are used to subsidize US customers.
It’s a little bit normal, historically, for Canadian prices to be a bit higher to deal with currency volatility without changing prices. But 20% US tariffs on Taiwan, with 50% on China and India, would normally result in at least a 20% discount for Canada.
Government inquiry followed by fine is ok. Forcing Apple to immediately normalize prices would be far more effective pressure overall on US trade policy.
From my understanding, the issue is that the existing supply chain in North America starts in The USA.
For example when Nintendo ships in a pallet of hardware, it gets Tariffed then goes to Canada and Mexico in freight.
What needs to happen (again to my understanding) is that companies need to start importing into Canada directly, which is no easy feat if our ports don’t have the capacity, and in short notice.
For now the result is we get Tariffed on our items by the USA.
Not true tariffs are applied for final destination country. So if they go through America but finale destination is Canada or Mexico there should be no tariffs.
That would only apply if the goods were being transferred directly from the ship to a train/truck/ship bound for Canada. That is to say, they are not sent through customs and received to a US warehouse.
That’s usually not what happens. Apple (or whoever) typically receive their goods to their US warehouse, pay tariffs, and then package and ship to Canada.
Amazon.ca should be boycotted, I wish AWS could be boycotted as well.
Force amazon to stop overcharging me to help them lower prices for Americans, and I’m happy enough. Is there an alternative that is not overcharging us, post below.
