Someone with more knowledge can say more, but I learned on my trip to Japan that the reason these cats look like this is due to Japan not having big cats. They had to base everything off the skins they received through trading.
Funny that you should say that. I was just thinking that these look like they were painted by someone accustomed to painting humans, based purely on a description rather than ever having seen a lion.
