Alberta Prosperity Project, a non-profit group that has been touring the province promoting independence

Follow the money. I remember looking into Wildrose Party in the early days, and every donor was an energy company or sitting on the board of an energy company. I noped the fuck out of that association.

For this petition to be approved, they need to collect 294,000 physical signatures from eligible Albertan voters over a 90 day period, those are incredibly onerous terms. Correct me if I’m wrong but at least it feels like purposeful obstruction to this passing.

It’s 10% of the voting population. They really wanted their own separatist referendum to pass, so they did revise it downwards, but this one had already been submitted:

Since Lukaszuk’s petition was submitted before the signature threshold for citizen-initiated referendums to get to ballots was lowered to 177,000 in early July, his petition will need to collect around 294,000 signatures from eligible voters over a 90-day period.

Okay that makes more sense. Still hard to believe it’s come to this but heading the separatists off at the pass seems like the right call.
