Well, we’ve figured it on things like canola (crush for oil), peas (fractionation plants), lumber (sawmills) and cattle (packing plants). Those have pretty much been in spite of ourselves, not because, as they’ve flourished when we’ve had trade wars with the US/China (or BSE as the case may be).

We just need a nice crippling tariff on raw lithium and we’ll invest in making batteries. Maybe an export tariff for anything that heads to the US, and funnel that to startup some competition to CATL. The amount of human labor a LFP plant uses is pretty minimal. It would give us all those high-tech retraining positions I keep hearing about we’re going to get any day now.

And we’ll just keep shipping it out of the country for pennies for other countries to make value added products.

That one reminds me of a place my dad went in to rehabilitate for the credit union my mother worked for that had repossessed it. Former owners had left the dogs in one of the bedrooms, presumably all the time for a couple years. I rented out my house while I was working out of town, I had exactly the same attitude. I just wanted someone that wasn’t going to trash the place, so I found someone that wasn’t an asshole and gave them a deal for a few years.

I had another place years before that where I thought I was giving someone a similar deal and they paid me back by absolutely gutting the place, even pulled the copper plumbing out of the walls. Cost me tens of thousands even after insurance. I had trust issues after that bullshit.

I know Lemmy hates landlords, but the fucking shit I’ve seen from renters would stagger people’s minds. Had a place where the kids wrote on all the walls with Sharpies and the carpet was covered with orange koolaid stains that wouldn’t clean out, had to tear out all the carpets.

I knew a guy that rented a place to a RCMP and when he went in there one day to fix something, he found a stack of used diapers at the bottom of the basement stairs where they were tossing them for several weeks. Couldn’t evict them for that, had to give full notice because the board sided with the cop.

I was told legal firearms owners were the problem and outlawing guns will fix everything.

I think this excuse that prices go up here because they went up in the US should put you in prison, like where the Weston family should be for price-fixing bread.
