US does a large amount of business with China but are against Canada having the same opportunities. Fuck the US. China may be as bad but that doesn’t make the case for continuing to do business with the US. We can sell what the US wants to buy but our government cannot make us buy US products.
Canada needs to do a major shift away from the US. They (government, not necessarily people) are only our ‘friends’ when we subordinate all of our policy to their wants. Trump isn’t new on this front, just so childish that it has become impossible to ignore. Even our prior ‘free trade’ was more about the US controlling Canadian business and innovation than actual free trade. Canadians are forced to buy far more American goods per capita than the US has ever bought of Canadian goods. For all the hand wringers worried about China spying on us, or dealing with countries that have human rights issues we disagree with, all that can be said about US and even more. Why people think we should continue to appease them, I don’t know. It won’t stop an idiot like Trump trying a military takeover if he feels like it, so we are better to be less tied to them to begin with. I wasn’t too sure about Carney but I liked his speech in Davos. I hope he continues on that road.
I’m hoping every person in Greenland also has that in mind.

Very sad. He did get an ECG and blood test early in his visit. Obviously they did not conclusively show that he was having a heart attack.
Chest pain being a heart attack is easy to diagnose after the fact and not nearly as easy to diagnose before.
Many things from serious to benign can present like a heart attack. I have gastro issues that present exactly as a heart attack and when I end up in the ER they have to go through the whole process of eliminating heart attack before treating what we know from history is the gastro related problem.
My aunt died of a massive heart attack a couple years ago in similar circumstances to this man, in a reputably ‘good’ ER. I know the staff were doing what testing they could. They cannot put every single person who comes in with severe chest pain and no ECG or blood enzymes abnormalities into a cath lab. They need something to go on and in fact not every heart attack clearly announces itself as such. Even if the media thinks it was a no brainer - after the fact - pain alone is not nearly enough to diagnose a heart attack.
Just like cancer, not everyone is going to have the right symptoms that result in finding it at an early stage when it is treatable. Putting someone with a cracked rib, or bleeding ulcer or some other such thing into a cath lab for a heart attack they aren’t having, won’t save any more lives.
It is a fallacy to think that we can always present ourselves in ER, any ER, in the nick of time to be saved from our bad health. Sometimes it is just way too late. Learn prevention: eat better, sleep adequately, exercise, get regular medical checkups (even if that means forgoing a vacation or other treats so you can afford to pay for it privately).
Albertans vote for small government and individualism - that means medicine becomes something you need to provide for yourself. We Canadians are paying for all the cutbacks in the 1990s when conservatives thought all government (and its services of medicine & education) was bloated. Along with the substantially lower taxes individuals and corporations now pay, we are never going to get the higher ratios of medical care we once had. And even so, in the ‘good old days’, even more people died.
Every oil company has bankruptcy in their plan for leaving AB. If they don’t purposely bankrupt their current company, they plan to sell to a subsidiary with no assets and then put it into bankruptcy. Standard oil business practice to take all the value while never paying any of the liabilities.
To be fair, most Americans agree with the capitalist first approach right up until it affects them individually. If they were willing to help each other instead of believing that anyone other than themself is a freeloader and lazy, they would have the support that other countries take for granted.

This has long been the problem with NATO requirements - the US has expected the money to funnel to them. If anything, Canada’s NATO money should be spent in Canada.

Plus NATO wouldn’t need as much spending if the US wasn’t continually instigating wars around the world to appease their oligarchs. Has there been a war anywhere in the world in the last 80 years that didn’t have CIA fingerprints all over it?
Capitalism is the problem. Capitalism is what caused the excess influx of immigration since the only workers corps want to hire need to work for minimum wage or less. Immigrants and TFW and International students are needed to accept those conditions on the mistaken belief that a year or so later they can move up. Instead the reality is that they help depress wages and drive up living costs. But it isn’t their fault. Same as the productivity problems that Canada has - workers cannot work/produce more in the same amount of time. New tech, training or equipment is needed to help them accomplish more in the same time. But corps want to blame workers as lazy and not admit it’s that the corps fault because they don’t want to put any of their profit into increasing output.

We chose to allow the US to dictate our EV production and gave the emerging market to China. We don’t get the last 20 years back for a do over. Import Chinese cars, decrease dependency on the US. Return to selling our soybeans and whatever else to China.
About famine, how far off is the US from it? If their farmers are failing as bad as they say they are, coupled with droughts in various other farming areas around the world, and if Russia is still bombing agriculture in the Ukraine, are we in store for shortages any time soon?
A week ago we were on a 400km drive. In that time there were 2 completely separate fatal accidents along our route. Both were caused by excessive speeding. Not just 10 or 20km over the speed limit but excessive. One was figured to be going more than double the speed limit. One of the assholes took another innocent driver with them. I have changed by opinion on speed cameras and red light cameras because even on city streets so many drivers think that whatever speed they want to do is ok and they don’t give a rat’s ass about anyone else on the road. Unless drivers improve, I think every technological means necessary should be used to tackle them.
Whatever it takes for me to be able to get away and nothing beyond that. That could be a single punch, it could be a gun shot. All depends on the circumstances at the time. The point is “only what is necessary for me to escape”.
Yeah that’s how American children get killed “breaking” back into their homes after sneaking out.
Is the article wrong? Biased?
Not sure if anyone on here works for any of the major Canadian grocery chains however if you do, could you clearly show everything that is made in or comes from the USA. That way we know to buy anything but those items. If I can’t easily tell, I’m just avoiding it but that might mean I’m missing buying things that are either Canadian or any other country of origin because I mistakenly think they might be American. Then again, my shopping is currently running less than it was in 2024 mostly from avoiding buying things, so maybe that’s a win?
