I’ve had an IT Career for about as long as you. I’ve had 2 memorable restore failures and got real lucky both times.

The first was a ransomware incident, and the onsite backup was not hit, but it was corrupt. Thankfully, the client had been using a 3-2-1 strategy, and the off-site one was fine.

The second was a situation where a failed update rendered a client’s RDS unbootable. This time, they didn’t have an on-site backup and the off-site one was corrupt. This time I happened to get immensely lucky in that there was no real data on that RDS, so I was able to spin up a fresh one, and install their LOB app and all was good.

We now test that all backups are stable every 6 months.

I mean, they’re not really wrong. Valve has a monopoly on game distribution the same way that Google has a monopoly on Internet search. Alternatives exist, but they aren’t really competing with Steam.

Valve has so far been pretty pro-consumer which is how they got to where they are, but yhat doesn’t really change the fact that they essentially get to set the rules for digital distribution of games.

That’s pretty much it exactly. Yubico has the required features, are widely supported, and are widely used. They have a track record of reliability.

Other viable alternatives definitely exist, but they don’t have the same real-world penetration. The disadvantage with that is if you run into a platform-specific issue, finding someone who has had the same issue before and posted the solution somewhere becomes far less likely.

Yubico is industry standard for a reason. The current 5 model will have all the features you need and they are basically indestructible.

I wonder why there isn’t a more reliable source of info coming out of North Korea. It must be a near utopia in there if the only people that make it out of the country are these unreliable defectors that universally agree that life is bad there.
