1·3 months agoI kind of like this. When I’m searching for how to do something, I probably don’t want your entire codebase, just don’t snippet that does the thing.
I’ll probably need to modify it so the thing works in a specific way, so I can make what I need to make.
Usually I just need a point in the right direction and I can assemble the rest.

11·3 months agoI was reviewing some PowerShell script today and it was absolutely atrocious. It’s only saving grace was that it was using actual PowerShell, not some hacky wmic call or anything.
I didn’t write it and I’m really glad for that. Whole lines of rewritten code commented out and just left there. Entire lines of # marks. There’s no reason this should be so densely commented. Your code should be self explanatory.
There were multiple queries to the same database that was then passed through a “where-object” selector by pipe, looking for a single value (pulling a database of thousands of entries for one line).
It was disgusting.
I’m not even a developer and I thought it was horrid.

5·3 months agoI ran it, and it was a (poorly) rebadged version of server 2003.
At least one app I used, refused to install on it because they “didn’t support server operating systems” … Yeah. That actually happened. It picked it up as the server 2003 version that XP 64bit edition was based on.
I just about jumped right off a bridge.
Yeah… That’s just unnecessary to put a dog at risk like that, whether service or otherwise.
Also, don’t work in a lab by yourself. Have a buddy, even if all they do is sit in a corner and scroll on their phone. Have someone there in case something happens.
In the best case, you’ve maybe wasted some of their time. In the worst case, at least you’ll have company in quarantine.
Weird place to mention that. But thanks?
I’m not trying to defend anyone here, though it might seem like that, but I’m not sure why valve is lumped in with this, especially since that’s the steam logo.
Steam, as a platform, hasn’t released much of anything, ever. Valve has been sitting mostly on the sidelines since half-life 2 episode 2 and HL:Alyx.
Steam itself is just a marketplace.
I get that a lot of publishers on steam will fall into the categories of games that are the subject of the meme, but I have a hard time piling steam with the games that are published on it.
And yes, corporations are not our friends, and all billionaires are bad billionaires, eat the rich and all that… I’m just saying. There’s a lot of bigger, much worse, fish to fry than gaben, valve, and steam in this discussion. That could have been EA’s logo, or the Xbox logo (or ms game studios or whatever) or any number of massive publishers that are relevant here. Using the steam logo is lazy at best.

4·3 months agoBoth for this and for healthcare.
The nurses are struggling to get a fair deal while somehow the billions a year put into healthcare goes where exactly?
Not to the front line staff, I’ll tell you that much.
And I get it, materials and equipment isn’t cheap but between nurses salaries and material costs, and the occasional multi-million dollar piece of equipment… I just don’t see where it’s all being spent. Between the middle and upper management, there needs to be an overhaul.
Education on every level isn’t dissimilar.
Hell, most government services need a review, at the very least.

1·4 months agoWhen I was a kid, first using computers in the mid 1980s, blue LEDs were considered to be impossible to make.
So my basic bitch IBM clone only had red indicator lights.
The implication is that people who grew up with newer technology had stuff that was fancier than the stuff older generations had, which is objectively true.
I’m sorry that you didn’t get the joke, and I’m sorry that I had to explain it to you.
Good luck with life, seems like you’ll need it.

6·4 months agoI don’t mean to imply your job with writing your thesis on it is easy, the proof needed would be no easy task.
But it’s hard to flip through a history book and stop on any page, and not find something on the page that’s harmful to nature.
Proving that it’s harmful would be the part that’s hard. Finding the occurrences of harm is easy.
