I think it may be vanilla. They add those “thought provoking stories” for users in certain markets based on Pocket. OP should just try disabling all the “show me ads on the homepage” settings and I wager it would all go away.

If you’re using IMAP, it would just be sending account credentials from your IP, but X sequential IMAP logins in a row from one IP would suggest one person in 2025, since everyone is using apps.

It’s possible that I’m mistaken. I’ve seen it claimed that it still has the IMEI, but that might be inaccurate, and I don’t know exactly where I saw it. I’ve never seen an explicit claim that it does not before now, so I’m not sure who is correct.

You should also beware that if you use the Google Play stuff for push notifications to work (even sandboxed afaik) it will include the IMEI in the payload when it phones home to Google.

I mean like 10k+ users by “mass audience,” ala Telegram. As far as I am aware, nothing will do a channel that large and actually encrypt e2e.

I’m also pretty sure Signal has a low cap on users per group – to do real encryption you’re inherently blasting all X users’ public key to all X users, AFAIK, nobody is really doing real encrypted group chats for mass audiences, although we do live in infinite compute world, so maybe I’m not up to date.

To what extent the Apple product is spilling data to Apple, it’s the Apple software doing it, which Linux would mitigate, but depending on which mac you have, it may not even support Linux yet. If anything, you should probably be more paranoid about Windows on modern Intel. The secure enclave shit Windows 11 requires has its own network stack it can use to phone home sans the OS knowing.
