Not the people’s permission. Canadians overwhelmingly disapprove of Trump’s actions towards Greenland. I think Carney is being cautious, but if he fails to support Greenland he will be removed from power. He only has a minority government.

Maybe Carney is buying time. The economy has to be on good footing first; he has a minority government and needs to keep his support up. Only about 1/3 of Canadians are currently awake to the threat posed by Fascist America, but everyone cares about jobs and prices. A military buildup is underway in Canada but it will take time. As Canada gets stronger and breaks away economically from the USA, the Americans will get weaker. Trump is squandering resources threatening countries on every continent. The US navy doesn’t know if it should be in the middle east or the Gulf of Mexico or the North Atlantic. His government is totally incompetent on economic matters - his trade war will ultimately hurt the US worse than the rest of the world. When the AI bubble pops, the US economy is gonna be fucked. I think that Carney doesn’t want to interrupt Trump as he is digging his own grave. Still, though, I would like Carney to be unequivocal in his support for Greenland and our remaining allies.

I think that if every non-US NATO country put boots on the ground in Greenland, Trump would stay the fuck away. He is a coward - he knows that if the rest of us stand together, it would be an ugly fight that would benefit no one. On the other hand, the only way the US wins cleanly in Greenland is if we fail to stand together. It would be good training too, but I think sending (a few of) our troops to Greenland could prevent the war.

100% agree. Each remaining democracy in the world is weak on its own, but even without the US, NATO is a superpower. We need to stand with Greenland.

I’m watching Minnesota every day. Americans are starting to wake up. There are more people opposed to Trump than supporting him - this will end when the opposition stands together.

50 troops to show solidarity with non-US NATO members would not leave us defenseless. Presenting a united front would do more to deter the states than actual violence.

I know you’re being sarcastic but you could totally be a poilievre speech writer.

Man, you nailed it. Feeling ashamed of my country today. Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted.

If you’re a coward and a fool, maybe.

What a disgrace for Canada. Once again, my country makes me feel ashamed.

Hmm. I’ll take Canada’s stagnation over america’s precipitous decline any day.

China is not an option, but a reality. I wasn’t consulted when people started buying massive amounts of cheap crap from china. Now, we are reliant on them for many things. Of course i agree that we should deal preferentially deal with democracies. Your strawman arguments are tiresome.

You are right about china, and until Trump started with the “51st state” by “economic coercion” i was totally opposed to cooperation with china. i still am, if i am being honest: i should have said “the only advantage”.
as for targeting canada - i am indeed worried about russian and chinese interference in our political system. however, us interference is just as bad. maga is spreading in canada with US dollars driving the advance. we are awash in american fake news and disinformation. americans spy on everything we do. all of our government data is hosted on azure cloud, and microsoft has admitted to european parliament that it has to obey us laws first - that is why germany is moving away from MS to other providers. we should do the same.
I would be delighted to build closer relationships with functioning democracies, but they are getting fewer and harder to rely on. meloni is a fascist, as is orban and erdogan - and that is just within nato! even japan just went far-right. for now we are stuck doing business with both china and the us. among the countries rated as « full democracies » by the economist, the largest economies are germany and uk; we already cooperate and trade with them.
i’m just saying that i feel like the threat at our doorstep is scarier than the threat across the ocean.

I am not a china fan but it does have one important advantage over the US right now: China is not actively threatening us.
If the americans ever wake up and hang trump from a lamppost, we could pivot back. a lot of stuff would have to change.
ideally, canada should be friends with other democracies. unfortunately, many other democracies are in the process of electing far-right whackadoos and mini-trumps. we don’t have an abundance of choices.

Shit just keeps getting worse down there. Plus they sent the most ridiculous bag of farts as the US ambassador to Canada. This Hoekstra idiot is so foul that he has done more to unite Canadians than anyone except Trump himself. He is a serious contemder for most hated man in Canada.

As i said elsewhere, this guy is so good for canada. We are more united now than any other time in my life, all because this guy never stops shooting his mouth off. Making him ambassador to canada was a yuge strategic error on Trump’s part.

Respectfully, i want every word this guy says broadcast across the country. He has been a miracle for unifying the country. Every Canadian i talk to seems to hate him and i just love that. He has harmed the advance of MAGA more than any single person inthe country.
This is great.
The other petition i would gladly sign is to stop using MS Azure cloud for all of Canada’s confidential / protected information. Microsoft has already admitted to the EU that they would hand over any country’s data if ordered to do so by the USA - even when that data is stored outside if the US. Microsoft is not that different from Huawei, it turns out
