Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have agreed to the broad outlines of a memorandum of understanding that would give Alberta special exemptions from federal environmental laws and offer political support to a new oil pipeline to the B.C. coast, CBC News has learned.

The deal is set to be formally announced at a joint Carney-Smith news conference in Calgary on Thursday.

It would be contingent on Alberta embracing a stricter industrial carbon pricing regime and a multibillion-dollar investment in carbon capture from the Pathways Alliance of oilsands companies, according to sources who spoke to CBC News.

I like how we’re sinking more money into a dying industry instead of spending it to push renewables and become a leader there. What happens when our pipelines are worthless? Our land becomes fucked, our economy becomes fucked, and we have nothing left.

We should kill off the oil and gas industry before it kills off human civilization.

Fuck Smith and fuck Carney, too. -One BC resident.

Also, carbon capture is bullshit that exists to give a veneer of environmentalism to fossil fuel projects.

If BC gets the short end of the deal like TMX this should be a big vote loser for the Liberals. If there’s a significant environmental thing that happens I could see the Liberal votes collapsing in BC.

There is a significant possibility of Smith not being someone actually wanting to spend 30B+ on a pipeline in 2025.
