1·1 day agoThose who buy -side Witch- can purchase -side Wizard- as DLC and vice versa, allowing you to experience both versions without having to pay for two full-priced games.
Still, kinda leaves a bitter taste in my mouth as it sounds like a capcom-esque dlc-on-disc type of scenario.

41·15 days agoLack of competition? WTF are you even talking about?
You’ve got Epic, GoG, itch.io, and not to mention publisher specific storefronts like origin, ubisoft’s whatever the hell launcher for PC.
That’s plenty of competition, it’s just that they suck at actual competition or are comfortable in their niche market.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•UK activist hits Valve with a $903 million lawsuit — claims Steam is abusing its market dominance and forcing UK consumers to pay too much for Steam gamesEnglish
193·21 days agoOkay. So how is Steam causing Nintendo to release their games at 80 dollars or rockstar threatening to sell the next GTA at 100 dollars due to Steam’s undue market dominance?
Also game developers have the option of using other platforms like epic, humble, itch, or using mostly DRM free GoG, my personal favorite.
As for the whole Steam preventing developers from selling elsewhere, I’d actually be interested in seeing their proof on this because developers have their games multiple storefronts at launch all the time. And kind of hypocritical to not sue Epic to for their exclusivity deals they make with publishers, literally preventing them from selling on another storefront.
Seems like a bullshit grifting lawsuit to me but hell I’m open to seeing what their actual evidence is.

9·23 days agoHonestly AMD only has mid-range this time around but the 9070 XT trades blows with the 5070 TI and the ray tracing, if you’re into that, is much better but not quite as good as Nvidia.
So another thing to consider is with Windows 11 being an AI dumpster fire that patches will brick your system, if you go with a Linux build, AMD or Intel would provide a lot better driver support than Nvidia.

As much as I absolutely hate China, at least there they respect science and research and are actually and actively recruiting foreigners and poaching immigrant Americans. Also European countries are recruiting too.
As an American, escape while you can.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Cyberpunk 2077 VR Modder Hit by Another DMCA Strike, Pauses Patreon, Pulls Access to All His Mods, and Declares He's 'Under Attack'English
125·26 days agoHere’s the thing, he and the other modders that are doing this are very much so running a fine line here. They’re modifying the game’s code, sure it’s in memory, but it’s their code they’re modifying to get things to work. It’s not just relying on using existing API calls that are open for them to use. Just because they’re not modifying the files on disk vs modifying in-memory doesn’t mean they’re not using their IP, they certainly are and there’s precedent that this type of action falls under the DMCA.
Take in point that Riot and Bungie and many other companies have DMCA’ed and sued cheat makers and hey those guys were also just selling mods for their games. They also weren’t selling any files from their copyrighted games either they were just selling a framework to inject their software into their games. So question is are you also saying that Riot and Bungie are also DMCA sue-happy people who are Debbie downers that are preventing coders from making money?
Your simplistic, it’s just a phone case, isn’t analogous here.
Don’t get me wrong, IP law is tricky and IANAL but again, when a company politely asks you to respect their ToS and not sell a mod using their IP and you throw a tantrum and manage to piss off your community, well good luck buddy.

Just a thought.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•CD Projekt Red has confirmed that it made a modder take down their Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod [VR Injection Framework: +100 games supported] because they were charging money for it [Patreon subscribers]English
8·27 days agoYour condescension aside, the fact that his framework worked for several games before this and their publishers/developers were fine with paid mod and if he releases the paid mod to work with BG3 and Larian would be okay with it, none of that is relevant here. So what if his software worked with other games? This particular game says you can’t have paid mods and CDProject was well within their right, and rightly so if you ask me, to make him get rid of it.
As for taking down whole business, once he scrubs his stuff of the CP 2077, he’ll be right back at it again his business is not sunk.
Now as for you argument that this was unnecessarily heavy handed and they should have asked nicely instead? Maybe, but we don’t know what either party said to each other outside of what both sides have publicly release and honestly Luke here sounds like a very unprofessional prima donna with the flare for the ultra dramatic and the only thing that seems to be solid is that they CDProject did ask that for that part of his mod, make it free and use donations instead which I still think is fair, you can release a singular package for the game with donations and have called it good while pay walling the rest who’s developers were fine with a paid mod on their game.
End of they day, even if they were heavy handed, they were well within their rights to take the mod down until their game is not part of their code base and it’s not that slippery slope argument you say it is and we just disagree on paid mods and methods used to remove them.

8·27 days agoI think you’re missing some nuance here.
3DSen is based on reverse engineering and not IP since it’s not selling the ROMs that come with it. All completely legal to sell and don’t mind buying to support this guy’s reverse engineering and transformation effort. If it was just some stock NES emulator that he was selling, eh, I’d probably just say legal but bullshit.
Lossless Scaling is a tool/actual framework that uses released/open source API calls to apply frame gen to any game, as far as I know and that’s not violating any terms or conditions or IP either.
With this, while I can appreciate that he’s done this for other game, the terms and conditions for them is “don’t use our tools to sell mods”. Do I agree with it? Actually yes, for the most part. I’m of the firm belief that the modding community should be open, I think that these are things that should be done for passion, I like having donations set up, and that we’re lucky that we live in an age that many game companies are kind enough to release modding tools without demanding a license fee. Plus he’s not selling a framework here, he’s selling his framework built with a company’s tools that says “No paid mods because we think the modding community should be open”.
I think that IP is often tricky and I think that this is fine and not a slippery slope argument.

643·28 days agoI’d like to briefly address the discussion around the “Cyberpunk VR” mod created by Luke Ross. We have indeed issued a DMCA strike, as it was available as a paid mod (only accessible to Patreon subscribers). This directly violates our Fan Content Guidelines: we never allow monetization of our IP without our direct permission and/or an agreement in place. We were in touch with Luke last week and informed him that he needs to make it free for everyone (with optional donations) or remove it. We are big fans of mods to our games — some of the work out there has been nothing short of amazing, including Luke’s mod for Cyberpunk 2077. We’d be happy to see it return as a free release. However, making a profit from our IP, in any form, always requires permission from
@CDPROJEKTRED
So they offered this guy to make it free with donations, which is reasonable in my opinion, and he said no.
Given that, I’m okay with this DCMA.

That would be a closing a gate after the horses have escaped situation.
Letting unverifiable code in would damage to developers and users that wouldn’t be easy to disentangle and erode trust in the product, killing it.
